Be aware of the XY problem.

Always ask why.

  • Someone wants X, thinks if they can do Y, they will get X. So they ask for Y.
  • Time is wasted solving for Y.
  • Turns out Y doesn’t necessarily solve X and wastes energy on potentially irrelevant efforts.

Instead, ask why they want Y. See if there is an X that they really want.
